When I visited China in the summer of 1988, my second destination was Shanghai. I flew there from Beijing with my two traveling companions. We were met at the airport by Chinese acquaintances. One of them acted as our guide for the two days of our stay.
Shanghai is the most populous city in China and also the center of business. We spent our first full day in the city exploring the waterfront. We walked through the former European district of the Bund, and we also visited Yuyuan Garden.
On our second day we took a cruise on the Huangpu, the river which runs through Shanghai. Our boat took us down the Huangpu to the point where it flows into the Yangtze. We ended our tour of Shanghai with a visit to the Jade Buddha Temple.
While we were in Shanghai we stayed at a new hotel that had only recently opened its doors. At 20 stories, it was one of the tallest buildings in China at the time. It was a modest harbinger of the skyscrapers that have transformed the skyline of Shanghai in the years since.
