Mannequins - Faces in the window

As I was walking home from a restaurant on St-Denis Street in Montreal on a cold winter night in 2006, the mannequins in a store window caught my eye. They were life-size and dressed in contemporary clothing. They were also well-lit and relatively close to me. Intrigued, I put my camera to the window and took portraits of the mannequins.
I had never looked closely at store mannequins before. I was surprised to discover that unlike the smiling, happy actors in television commercials, these mannequins all projected an image of cool detachment. Their expressions seemed to reflect the mix of assertiveness and self-consciousness that is often part of early adulthood.
I spent several more nights photographing store mannequins in various parts of Montreal. I walked through Plateau Mont-Royal, Rosemont, downtown and Verdun.
