Under the viaduct - Winter walk
December 24, 2010

The area under the Rosemont-Van Horne viaduct in my neighborhood in Montreal has become one of my favorite places to photograph. The viaduct was built to connect the Mile End and Rosemont districts. Most people speed over it in their cars without a thought for what goes on below. Life at ground level proceeds on at a slower pace and is rich with a variety of activities.
Late on Monday afternoon I walked from the corner of St. Laurent Boulevard and Cloutier Street to the corner of St. Denis Street and Rosemont Boulevard. I crossed the CP rail tracks at a break in the fence and meandered under the superstructure of the viaduct. Along the way I observed people jogging and walking home from work. I saw new graffiti, both city-sponsored and spontaneous, as well as factories devoted to zinc die casting and clothing manufacturing. During the course of my walk the fading light of the mid-winter sun cast its glow on well-established trees and freshly-fallen snow.
