Firebird - Karinska interprets Chagall

Firebird

This is the jacket my cousin Sebastian Peskind wore during his performaces as a page in Firebird with the New York City Ballet in June 2006. The ballet was choreographed by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, based on the music of Igor Stavinsky. The costumes were created by Karinska from designs by Marc Chagall.

My photograph is part of a group exhibition inspired by the song Le quêteux by Guillaume Arsenault as arranged by the group Bon Débarras. The song tells the story of a beggar who's being questioned by the people he seeks charity from. He finally tells them that if they don't realize his rags shine with the fine stitches of time, then they can keep their charity. Similarly, the costume that Sebastian wore in the Firebird holds within its threads a rich story, but one that only those who are prepared to listen can to hear.

Firebird will be on display at Ça décoiffe, a barber shop at 4526 Papineau Avenue (map) next to La Tulipe. Feel free to drop in to view Firebird and the photographs of the other participants in the show, which will be on until March 28, 2010.

The barber shop is open Thursday (9:00-6:00), Friday (12:00-8:00), Saturday (9:00-4:00), Sunday (10:00-5:00) and Monday (9:00-6:00).

You're welcome to attend the opening of the next show at Ça décoiffe. The opening will be on March 29, 2010 at 9:00 PM ... the night of the full moon!

Here are the lyrics of Le quêteux, which was written in French:

à me donner contre ma charité hein?
Mais qu'est c'é que t'as quêteux
à me donner contre ma charité?
