Film noir: Mari and her father in Ujina
July 20, 2011

While I was staying in Hiroshima in June I visited the port of Ujina with my friend Mari and her father. We came across a tall monument with several openings at the base. Each opening was mirrored and gave access to a small circular room.
While Mari and her father waited, I stepped into the room and moved from opening to opening and took a series of photographs. One half of each image is a direct view of the outside and the other half is a reflection.
Mari and her father are in many of the photographs but several other people appear as well: a man with a motorcycle, a woman pushing a man in a wheelchair, a man with a security pass, a man on a bicycle, a clarinet player. Viewed in sequence, the photographs make me think of the novels of Haruki Murakami, where apparent strangers who pass by each other are interconnected in an existential way.
