2Fik as Alice at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

View slideshow

2Fik is an interdisciplinary artist who explores issues of identiy, culture and sexual orientation through visual media and performance art. He's created a number of personas that he interprets in photomontages and videos.

On July 18, 2011, I photographed 2Fik at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in the persona of Alice, a Franco-Lebanese woman who manages a Paris fashion agency in Montreal.

I photographed 2Fik as Alice descending a staircase in Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion, which was designed by the architect Moshe Safdie. Alice is wearing a dress by the Montreal designer Denis Gagnon, who recently had an exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

I was inspired by Marcel Duchamp's painting Nu descendant un escalier n° 2/Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2. Duchamp himself was influenced by Eadweard Muybridge's photo series Woman Walking Downstairs.
